You are in DMA mode, why would it burn this slow ?

Did you install the burner yourself ?

Are the jumpers set properly ?

Master / Slave / Cable Select ?
Is it on the same IDE Bus as your Hard Drive ?

Try updating to the newer available version of CxD, as indicated to you by the log. I don't recognize your version, but I'm new to this.

Unless your system is REALLY old and slow there is something badly wrong. You are using XP, so your system can't be that old.

Open casing and check that you have hard drive(s) in different IDE cable
than CD/DVD and burner. Keeping them in same cable slows performance.
Check that all drives are set to "Cable select" and that burner is on second IDE cable end, not in middle.

Check that you have enough virtual memory and that there is no other processes running on background that use drives in same IDE cable as burner. Use TaskManager to check CPU, memory and virtual memory usage during burn.

I think the computer is in fact a notebook...

Optiarc DVD RW AD-5540A 2.01 is a slim dvd burner.

...yeah, i'm using a notebook, so... yeah. But i AM burning the media directly from my external hard drive. Would placing it on the internal one maybe solve the problem? And i'd also rather not upgrade yet, since i keep hearing that it messes up the audio/video sync.

How is that external drive connected?
USB is SLOW when transferring lots of data, specially if you use it as temporary drive, it will cause this problem.
Try burning from internal drive to clear this.

Hi,

I have an external USB Hard Drive (USB 2.0) and I always burn all my movies from that drive (Burning at x4.0) and never had an issue.

I would make real sure that USB is 2.0 (Which is probably 1.1) this is why it's that slow.

God, i'm gonna freakin kill someone. So it's on SAO, the media's on the internal drive and it STILL DOESN'T WORK! GAH! The burning speed was only 2.4, too. I just checked my logs from my 3 (first) successful burnings (from the external drive) and they say 2.4 there too! This doesn't make sense. Just before this i burned 3 dvd's that work perfectly fine. *sigh* Well, here's the log.

There is progress.

Your earlier burns were much slower:
9/18/2007 3:53:57 AM info Writing speed requested x4.0, effective x0.5

There is no real speed as burning did not finish.

Now you got finished burn with first request:
9/20/2007 11:59:27 AM info Writing speed requested x4.0, effective x2.4

And actual result:
9/20/2007 12:29:40 PM info Write finished in 00:30:12 - Finalization start here. Avg. burn rate 1.82

These speeds are still too slow, how much RAM do you have? How big is your page file (virtual memory file) ?

If you haven't done anything with Virtual Memory (which by the sound of it you haven't) then it's likely Windows managed by default, so you can just keep it as is. However, you should get more RAM.

Hello, i am having the same problem as the guy that started this thread, so I didn't feel the need to start another one. I too got the same "write error at 0 (16) ... ... Power calibration fail (cd burner is dirty)" and, like this threads origional author, I just bought the dang thing...I/OMagic external with lightscribe; usb interface...the funny thing is, i did manage to get one good dvd out of it with convertxtodvd. I ALSO had 2 dvd's that burned successfuly, but wouldn't play...and now im getting this "dirty burner" error...but besides that, i've had this burner for 1 day, staying up all night to get these workout video's to dvd so i can start a workout regiment...

i'll post the log in an attatchment so it doesn't crowd the screen...

Hi,

9/25/2007 11:10:00 AM info Writing speed requested x16.0, effective x16.0
9/25/2007 11:09:59 AM info Available write speed: 16x, 12x, 8x, 6x, 4x, 2.4x
9/25/2007 11:09:59 AM info Media ID: AML-003-00

You are burning at 16x with is never recommended and on absolutly CRAP media.

Those media are good for target shooting.

Burn them at x2.4 MAX and run a VSO Inspector Scan on them, to make sure you can read 100% the media after the burn.

Get Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media, and burn x8.0 MAX and most of your problems will go away !
