Documentation about H.264, etc. custom profile options?

Hi,
is there anywhere a documentation about the VSO converter options regarding the custom profiles?
E.g. I want to know what base, main, high, etc. means and how "automatic (default)" works and finally results.
I've ripped many BR's (remuxed) 1:1 into .m2ts on many hard discs. I want to convert some to lower quality and move these to the receiver hard disc (too many films for the children ,) ).
btw: I just noticed this:
I've ripped The Hobbit 1:1 remux ~2 years ago. Mediainfo shows as format profile Main@High and the .m2ts file has 16 GB.
I just ripped again 1:1 remux (because I missed the subtitles) - now the film has 30 GB and format profile is High@L4.1 ...
This all is a little bit confusing.
