Two subtitles at same time?

Post by tas »

Evangelion 2.22 (Region A) has a problem when converting to .avi (using version 1.4.0.8)

There are subtitles for the dialogue (bottom of screen), and separate subtitles for song translations (top of screen).

When only one is displayed they work as expected, but when both should show up only one appears, often in the wrong position. It appears that only the last one updated is displayed and the other one vanishes even when it should remain on screen.

Hi,

You are talking about subtitle overlap, these subtitle types will be supported in future version...

Thank you.

Yes subtitle overlap. I'll keep a lookout for that feature in future updates.

I noticed from your newsletter that a new version has been released.
Is subtitle overlap supported in the new version? I didn't see anything in the list of features.

Has support for overlapping subtitles been added to version 3?

Hello,

I guess Cedric understands what you are talking about, I don't.

Do you have an example file of the original video or subtitles you would like to use you could send us?

Hello Tas,

I added your feature request for the next beta release, I will wait for your feedback when this version will be released.
If the problem persists, I think I will need your file to investigate more.

Hello Tas,

Can you confirm that your subtitles overlap problem is fixed in last beta version (3.3.0.3):

I'm waiting for your feedback...

Both subtitles are displayed but there is a problem!
There is a big yellow (colour of subtitles) box that appears over both sets of subtitles. See attached

file.

The "Warning" at the top is there for the full scene, the dialogue at the bottom is updated a few times.

From the same Blu Ray. Evangelon: 2.22 region A from Funimation.

Do you use a profile where the subtiles are merged in video?
Can you try with a bluray profile where a separate subtile stream is created?

If I convert Blu Ray to Blu Ray format it is OK. (but not very useful)
If I convert to an MKV file with soft subtitles (I can turn them off) I get the big yellow blob. For example this file...
MKV with blob.jpg
looks just like the image in the above post when played with subtitles turned on. Big yellow block between the two subtitles.

Edit:
I just tried a couple of formats where subtiles are merged in video both .avi and .mp4 and I see subtitles in the advanced edit preview, but not in the preview during encode, or the final file.

Hello tas,

I think the problem is when converting a 256 colors subtitle (Blu-ray) to a 4 colors subtitle (DVD subtitles).
Can you create a custom MKV profile and select Blu-ray subtiles format as subtitle codec?

I'm waiting for your feedback...

I'll give that a try.

Yes, that works.

I upgraded to the latest Beta ( 3.4 0.2 ) and Merged in Video subtitles now work as well (I didn't get any subtitles with the last beta).
It's only the standard MKV file that gives me the big yellow square
