"Unknown File" error and general video playback problems

Post by dlb »

If I try to play any AVI file with AC3 audio, I get an "Unknown File" error. Also, it appears that VSOMP does not play store-bought DVDs. When I select "Open Bluray/DVD" and point to my DVD drive with a regular commercial (store bought/rental) DVD movie, I get a "No valid DVD found" error. It doesn't matter if I point to the DVD drive, or to the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD itself, it simply errors out. VSOMP also will not play ISO rips of DVD movies, while other media players have no problems with these files either. I think that VSOMP needs some work with the codecs. I have no problems with playback of AVI files with AC3 audio with any other media player, and all other media players also play back commercial DVD movies (and ISO rips as mentioned earlier). I think VSOMP could be a decent player, it just needs a lot of work.

Unfortunately, you are not alone in this problem.

Often VMP can be made to work again by uninstalling and then installing again - but it is not consistant, and may only work for one or a few DVDs, DVD-folders or video files (such as .mpeg). Closing VMP or rebooting the PC is nearly guaranteed to cause the problem again.
The bottom block in the log entries below, shows one run with repeated memory write errors (access violations) upon trying to open various DVD-folders (DVD ripped to hard disk).
VMP was then removed and reinstalled without a reboot. Nothing else was changed and no other programs were run. The top block shows the next run with successful reading/playing of the same DVD folder.
After closing the program and reopening again, the memory access violations (at the same address) occurred.

Note:
On one occasion, I had the following, different, memory address referencing a .DLL, part of the nVidia drivers:
2011-07-16 10:33:43 Warning Stream information exception: "Access violation at address 0528C1C1 in module 'nvcuvid.dll'. Read of address 3F3F3F9F"

There is another new problem, in that one cannot delete DVD and video files from the play-list once added.

Update note: I've since tried this on two Windows XP-Sp3 systems. No problems experienced with either build v212 (download was listed as 211-beta) or v216.
However with three Windows-7 64-bit systems, the problems are there.

Thanks both of you for posting the problems you encountered.

VMP cannot play protected disks without a decyprtor, mostly likely what dlb is referring to for his "commercial DVDs".
Check this guide for more info on: how to play protected disks with VSO Media.

Thanks for the program update today!
Installed v0.1.1.228 as an upgrade over 0.1.1.216 - running under Windows-7 Ultimate x64.
Launched and checked settings.
Dragged and dropped DVD folder into VMP. VMP ran through the initial checking screen without the "file format unknown" error, however the "Please wait ..." message then appeared. 10-minutes later it was still there on screen and the program was totally locked. Forced to crash/kill the VMP.

Error log shows the following entries:

Uninstalled and hacked out as many VMP registry entries as possible.
Re-installed v0.1.1.228.
Drag and dropped .MPG file into VMP - errored and failed to play.
Changed file associations to include .mpg and .mpeg
Dragged and dropped another smaller .mpg (a title sequence, with no audio within file). Played, repeatedly.
Dragged and dropped a different .mpg, played with sound
Dragged and dropped more mpg files - including the one that initially failed! All played.

Re: "Unknown File" error and general video playback problems

Post by Claire »

Hello astage,

Your testing is very good and we appreciate you providing so much feedback.

As the problems do not seem consistent and difficult to reproduce we can't know if there are related specifically to your files are a set of circumstances. Do you agree? Or have you found a consistent way to reproduce some of these problems?

It might help if we test with the same files you have, or at least that one finicky mpg file you have. I have sent to you by private message instructions on how to send the file, if it is possible.

To sum up you have 2 problems:
1) DVD folder does not play - it crashes vmp
2) mpg playback problem (either invalid or failed to play*)

* When you say it "failed to play" is this different behavior than when you "play List indicates it as "Invalid"' - or is the the same thing, just said differently/explained differently?

Thanks again for your help!
