Please help this newbie: fails with "running low on memory"

Post by DSperber »

Brand new 1st-time user, experimenting with the product for the trial period and will buy it if only I can get it to complete the simple test task:

I have two MP4 files (1920x1080p 24fps MPEG-4), each one about 6GB. I want to produce a BluRay containing both of these files on it, with a simple main menu that offers mavigation to play either of the two titles. No chapters, no nothing except the two titles.

Audio is EAC3 (DD 5.1).

Also, I want the production process to do a "raw copy" with no recompression or transcoding. Pure copy of original audio and original video, packaged into BDMV output with a simple menu. Output to a 25GB single-layer BluRay blank disc.

I believe I've got everything set right, and the process kicks off nicely in "raw copy" mode for both files. Then the first file reaches about the 33% mark and pauses because it is "running low on memory". The second file continues to convert, reaching about 35% when it too seems to quit because of "running low on memory". But the message disappears so quickly, and the "we have a problem" sound is issued, so that I can't really take a screenshot to show the last state of things when it dies.

I will post the most recent log file here, for someone's review. Maybe you can see what the problem is, because I can't make sense of what is on the log file. I will also be glad to post my "Default Settings", if someone wants to know what I've set. Or, if you can just tell me what the key settings should be I'll double-check against what I have, change things if I need to, and re-test.

I have not had this issue, but looking at the error message. How much RAM does your computer have and what is the operating system?

32GB of RAM. Windows 7. And when the program is running Aida64 shows that only about 20% of RAM is actually "in use".

I could (and will) certainly retry this on a Win10 machine, just to see if that's relevant. But really??

So nobody can suggest what I need to do, either to overcome this specific problem (if you've encountered it yourself) or precisely what the settings would need to be in order to accomplish the objective?

I've run the VSO reporting tool, and submitted a formal ticket to them. We'll see how they respond tomorrow when they return to the office.

In the meantime, I thought I'd post some additional screenshots here, in case any of this looks familiar to people or clarifies things or jogs some memories or ideas. Hard to believe the program simply doesn't work. I've now retried the whole pilot project on a Win10 machine, with exactly the same results as with my Win7 original PC.

First, my settings. Again I'm simply adding two MP4 files (MPEG-4, 1920x1080p HD, EAC3 DD5.1 audio, about 9Mb/s data bitrate, size about 6GB each, 23.976 fps) into a single BluRay. I've deleted all of the every-5-minute default chapters for each title, so there's just the one "chapter" in each title, namely the entire file. Each file is about 78 minutes in length. Output is supposed to be a 1080p BluRay, simple main menu with 2 titles on it, no chapters in each title. NO CONVERSION, no re-compress or transcode, just pure original unaltered 100% source audio/video quality, and output is targeted as 25GB BluRay media so this 2-title production will fit with no problem at all.

And now here are the results. I was simultaneously running Task Manager -> Performance Monitor -> Memory while the conversion runs, to see what memory ConvertXtoHD is using up while the two titles are processed. Keep you eyes on FREE, STANDBY, and IN-USE totals in the Performance Monitor window in the lower part of each screenshot. And also the specific amount of memory being used by ConvertXtoHD in the upper details part of Performance Monitor memory usage.

NOTE: screenshots (3), (4) and (5) below show Titleset2 as "paused". That's only because I pushed the PAUSE button to suspend the conversion process so that I could take my screenshots. In fact Titleset2 task is running all the way until it finally dies (along with Titleset1 which died earlier) as shown in screenshot (6).

(1) Starting, both tasks kick off.

Image

(2) Continuing along, both tasks still running fine:

Image

(3) Titleset1 just paused, because of insufficient available memory (according to some mysterious criteria or a program bug), Titleset2 continues to run at least for a little while:

Image

(4) Titleset2 coming down its home stretch before it too dies, now approaching using up just about all of FREE memory (according to Performance Monitor):

Image

(5) Titleset2 probably in its death throes, no FREE memory:

Image

(6) Titleset2 dead now as well, along with Titleset1, and audio sings "we have a problem":

How much virtual memory do you have?
It seems to be complaining about that.
Still, even if you have huge amount of virtual memory available it might be that CxHD3 can't use it, maybe due being 32bit app.

16GB physical on the 64-bit Win10 machine which generated that last series of detail screenshots from the problem. 32GB on the 64-bit Win7 machine I first tried this on, which generated the original LOG.

It cannot possibly be the amount of actual physical memory or virtual memory which is involved here. As you can see the program simply eats up memory as it progresses through the conversion, and apparently is not giving it back. Whatever is the program design there appears to be some defect.
It seems to be complaining about that.
It's only "complaining" because it is consuming all available memory and not releasing it. The screenshots showing Resource Monitor's reflection of what CxHD3 is doing prove that. It's simply using up all of memory, for whatever reason I do not know.
Still, even if you have huge amount of virtual memory available it might be that CxHD3 can't use it, maybe due being 32bit app.
Nonsense. It is clearly a program bug. There could not possible be a built-in design for a "minimum machine configuration" sufficient to run the program, and none is declared in the program marketing writeup.

Now, the real question is: AM I ALONE? Do others successfully use the program? If so, then the VSO vendor developers need to figure out what is different about the very very very simple task I am trying to accomplish and which simply fails because the program is not properly releasing memory buffers or whatever it's doing. Something about my Settings must be responsible for this, uncovering an obvious program design defect.

Has anybody here done this simple simple thing I'm trying to do? Create a 1080p BluRay in original source quality from two MP4 1080p MPEG-4 titles. No compression, no transcoding, no nothing... just straight copy-to-Bluray BDMV (i.e. remux, "raw copy") for audio and video. Simple as pie. Could not be simpler.

I have submitted a formal ticket to Support, using the VSO reporting tool to generate it. I submitted it last night and haven't heard back yet.

NOTE: I have successfully accomplished the identical objective ON THE FIRST TRY using DVDFab BluRay Creator (i.e. DVDFab 12). However I was disappointed with that product's weakness and lack of functionality in doing authoring, so I continued to look for another option. I had previously used free multiAVCHD to accomplish my BluRay authoring, but it was long ago abandoned by its author and does not support MPEG-4. Hence my current search for a replacement. The VSO CxHD3 product was recommended, and it's for sale, so I'm really quite surprised it doesn't work... at least at the moment, for me.

I'm trying to duplicate your problem, sadly I don't have files in mp4 - only in mkv format.
Same settings as yours.

Re: Please help this newbie: fails with "running low on memory"

Post by DSperber »

I have sent you a PM providing a download link to (a) one of my MP4 files, so that you can test with exactly the same file I am using with no success, and (b) my actual XtoHD project.

Note that my project seems different from yours, in that there are no customized chapters as your project showed, straight-through 1920x1080p to 1920x1080p rather than dealing with a non-standard input resolution file, etc. Best that you start from my project, and then you can determine if there's some particular setting I've done wrong or not done that I needed to do, in order to achieve success.

STILL FAILS, even with just one title as input. NOTE: I am using the trial version, not the fully licensed or commercial version. That may be relevant??

Bottom line: to simplify things I have now removed the second title from the project, ending up with just the one MP4 file (provided to you via PM) to produce a BluRay from. If you use my MP4 file and my project, and run with a "trial" version of the program, maybe you can reproduce my failure. If not, we need to look deeper to figure out what's different in our two environments that could explain my inability to get it to complete.

Here is the LOG from the latest one-title test.

Also, here is a series of screenshots showing memory consumption during this one-title test. The machine hasn't been re-booted since consuming all of memory in an earlier test. This new test simply is a new test, but now with just one file in the project.

(1) Initial memory state, XtoHD launched, project opened, ready to push CONVERT

Image

(2) Memory state just after XtoHD starts, with conversion of the one file now at 5%.

Image

(3) Memory state with XtoHD at the 30% conversion mark.

Image

(4) Memory state with XtoHD at the 60% mark.

Image

(5) Program continued past 60% and made it just past 70% when the program failed again, with no more available memory. Looks like "available memory" just dipped below 5GB, but I'm not sure that's the criteria for "out of memory". Anyway, this is what it looked like as quickly as I could click after the program died. The error message box just got put up on the screen, and I don't know just how much of memory as been partially released as a result of this condition.

Image

(6) I moved the message box away, and it looks like some further release of memory has occurred.

Image

(7) I've now clicked on OK of the message box, which seems to have resulted in a large release of memory.

Image

(8) Closed XtoHD program, memory returned to available.

If you don't mind, I believe it would be extremely useful and helpful if you would also post your own screenshots for the one-title conversion test you run with my provided MP4 file and project definition, showing Resource Monitor output of memory utilization same as I've done.

If the test using my file works successfully for you while it fails for me, there obviously is something else in the two environments which is different and probably responsible. But unless you provide Resource Monitor screenshots while running your own test (again, at the 5%, 30%, 60%, etc.) we don't really have a clue about what is different between your setup and mine. But if looking at the comparable memory numbers something really startlingly different or revealing jumps out at us, we probably could make a big breakthrough.

A picture's worth 1000 words, so please post your own Resource Monitor screenshots during the conversion, as I've done.

Thanks.

Re: Please help this newbie: fails with "running low on memory"

Post by JJ »

Just had time to do one conversion. And it worked without any problems.
Only change was to disable HW conversion, all in CPU. This is a bug that has been reported before.

Code: Select all

You ran your test using my MP4 file, but you didn't use my project. Looks like you created your own project and simply added my MP4 file.

If you look at my latest log posted above, you will see that I do NOT have hardware encoding specified.

Image

This matches the Settings -> Hardware optimizations in the project definition:

Image

I didn't actually notice this before, and probably would have activated hardware encoding if I'd been paying attention as I reviewed all of the Default Settings. But as it turns out I did not activate it, so my test (as proven by my log) absolutely does NOT have hardware encoding specified.

So while your first (failing) test using my MP4 might have had HW encoding specified while your second (successful) one did not, my tests have always not have HW encoding specified.

So I don't think we're any closer to knowing why your test (second one) works and mine does not.

I still would like to request that you post a couple of your TASKMGR Resource Monitor screenshots of memory utilization as your job runs. Maybe at 5%, 30%, 60% and 90%. That should let me see what your envirnment is like, something that at the moment I have no idea about.

I looked at the audio options in your log file, and realized I really should have left it specified as "automatic", which is the same as "raw copy", which is what I wanted, same as for video. No conversion of any type, simply copy input to output, for both audio and video. I had naively specified "convert to AC-3, 5.1 channels" which is what my MP4 already is. I didn't understand the English or what "Automatic" implied (until I looked into the user manual for further clarification).

Thinking perhaps this might be relevant, I tweaked my project to specify audio as "automatic" and re-ran the test. It still failed, but sure enough the log now shows "raw copy" for both audio and video. And also NO HARDWARE ENCODING (if as you say this is what I need to specify, to overcome the bug in hardware encoding which you say has been reported).

Image

I still am of the opinion that it appears there's a program bug that simply is not releasing memory as conversion progresses, but rather the entire output must be getting accumulated in memory. If you look at the following series of screenshots it's obvious the "commit" size associated with XtoHD just gets larger and larger. This makes no sense. Unless it's caused by my "trial version" I can't see how this can possibly ever work, and yet it does for you (but you have a "fully licensed" version).

One more time, look at the ever-growing memory associated with the program demonstrated in the following screenshots, consuming more and more memory until obviously some critical threshold for remaining available memory is reached and the program craps out. This cannot be proper behavior for converting one or more titles of essentially unlimited size. My one title is 79 minutes, but it obviously could be much longer and no machine has INFINITE memory.

Here's the log from my latest test with "raw copy" for both audio and video.

Set both Subtitle & Audio option to: (Disabled) Always Encode
The option you now selected is for Blu-Ray compatible structure.
As you are using a MP4 and you current setting this will not work.
If possible, Enbale Hardware Acceleration.
Is there a possiblillity that you send me the MP4 file?

I did load your project and it loaded that file, only thing I changed was location of mp4 file.
That one crashed. Then I did load your project again and changed only HW settings. Conversion successful.

Well I don't understand. I thought I could provide my project file and if you used it you would exactly duplicate my settings. Apparently that's not true.

(1) Your originally posted log showed that hardware encoding had been specified, but my project did not have that setting enabled as I showed.

Image

Your second log (with hardware encoding disabled by you, from its original opposite) confirmed that setting. But my log always showed that hardware encoding was NOT ENABLED in my own project.

(2) And your log showed the creation of chapters every 5 minutes, whereas my log does not. Here's the "chapters generate" line in your log, which does NOT appear in my log.

Image

(3) While this every 5-minutes option is certainly what my "default setting" is.

Image

However I manually deleted all of the "generated chapters" using the GUI "Preview Editor":

Image

And exactly as expected my log does NOT show the "chapters" line shown in your log.

That's why I'm mystified. I thought I could just provide my project file to you and it would duplicate my world exactly. Apparently that's not the case.

Anyway, I'm still not able to convert even just this one MP4 title successfully. I will try the settings changes suggested by Nemesh a bit later. His remark to USE HARDWARE ENCODING is, of course, the direct opposite of what you said. My own thought is that while this might produce a conversion performance difference it still shouldn't explain the "STORAGE LEAK" exhibited by the program even when running without hardware encoding as I'm seeing.

I don't follow.

My log shows exactly what I expected to see, namely NOT TO ENCODE but rather to just "raw copy".

Image

And this is exactly what I would have expected per the user manual documentation:

Image
If possible, Enable Hardware Acceleration.
I may try this later. But it's the exact direct opposite of what JJ said had to be used, suggesting there was a known bug in hardware acceleration. He said that was the case when he first tried the test using my MP4 file. Only after turning off hardware acceleration did his second test work.

Of course he still didn't post any screenshots of Resource Monitor memory utilization during his run, so I'm sure there's more to the story which is still unknown. And even if hardware acceleration was fine to use, I suspect it would only affect performance, not cure the "storage leak".
Is there a possiblility that you send me the MP4 file?
Done.

Ok.
Steps I took now:

Load your project, click on convert.

At start this:
test.png
test1.png
test2.png
Then during conversion:
test4.png
test3.png
test5.png
And failed, stopped program and after it was closed:
