That stretching might be due you selecting 16:9 instead of 4:3 - or even auto setting.
In DVD picture can be 4:3 or 16:9 and it has EXACTLY same resolution. Wrong setting there makes a lot of difference.
1080 is not stretched because there is no anamorphic selection in 1080.

I selected 4:3. I already burned a second disc just to be sure I selected the proper one. It still stretched everything.

There are starting to seem to be so many issues that I wonder if it shouldn't have been released yet.

1. I was reading through the beta thread and some people were having various file types give error messages and some had bluray players that wouldn't even play their discs.

2. I am having this stretching issue.

3. Fast forwarding 1080 conversion content was slow and clunky and a lot of weird noise was at the bottom of the picture (I haven't checked yet to be sure it was only there when forwarding).

4. The file sizes and listed bitrates on converted files are very close to the same whether using short or medium project. There's no way it could fit double the amount of content with medium as it fits with short project if it's almost the same file sizes!

5. That issue where windows explorer and windows update stopped working temporarily and I got a bunch of access error messages from this program while that was happening.

Most customers may not even use 480 4:3 so maybe I am only a rare one affected by that, but those other issues are pretty bad. I want AT LEAST as good of quality as convertxtoDVD and use less discs, otherwise why even use this program?

Also I always used linear upsizing default in convertxtoDVD, but tried lanczos in this one. Maybe that led to some issues such as #3 above.

I am going to sue blu-rays if I ever get this to work properly, but I did not want to waste them testing, so I have tested with avchd format. I have no idea if that changes anything related to any of these issues.

Sadly your reports of problems are almost completely useless without log files.
There is simply way too many settings and formats to use, and it is impossible to reproduce those problems without log.

No it isn't. I already told you short project, lanczos, 480 4/3, letterbox, AVCHD with source material of 480 or lower resolution. What else could possibly affect stretching other than those? I have it set to NOT skip root menu, yes go to menu after a titleset completes, basically very little did I change in the settings from defaults other than using lanczos and 480 4/3. If you feel like trying it or if staff does, it's going to stretch it because it's already done it for me every time. Even the root menu seems stretched to me. And I forgot to also mention when playing a title if I press the menu button on my remote it does nothing, but in convertxtoDVD it would go back to the root menu.

Also I am not using any hardware encoding or decoding.

I just tested yet again, this time with video from an actual dvd and using linear resizing, which I figured would make no difference, but just wanted to try, and sure enough yet again it was stretched when watching on the Blu-ray player.

Also my computer is VERY loud when using even just 2 conversions at the same time.

And what's with finalizing discs taking so long? It took longer to finalize my last disc than it took to actually burn the files onto it. On the "closing media" step of finalizing, it got to 100% AT LEAST 12 different times before it finished that step.

Apparently I have to convert only one at a time and take forever or my computer will explode. And I have to put my tv in 4:3 mode to force it to undo the stretching unless this is solved. This tv is one with gray bars so I also would have to go into the service menu to even change them to black (not regular menu). A big hassle plus I bet it's hurting video quality to stretch and unstretch it.

I did find out that the weird noise at the bottom of the picture happens in any resizing method I use and also it only shows up when fast forwarding or reversing, so that's at least better than if it had been there when playing!

I kept burning and comparing discs for a long time to the point of having a headache and I just don't know what to think or do anymore. It's so frustrating trying to figure out which settings to use.

For instance, on one show I noticed noise outlining someone's arms. Well, it seemed more obvious when using laczos than when using linear. Unless I was imagining it. It's too hard to tell. And sometimes I thought one of those made details clearer than the other, but other times I thought the opposite.

I can't even decide which resolution to use because sometimes I think it's improved with HD resolution and sometimes I don't. I am so confused. It takes much more space for HD and the content is not HD originally so I probably should use SD and save space, but if HD truly works out better I would rather use the best picture.

Also, I pressed info when the disc menu was up. IT SAID 4:3. Then when PLAYING videos it said 16:9. So this is NOT my tv or player settings causing this, or it would also stretch the menu to 16:9, but it doesn't. For some reason when I use 4:3 settings in this program it's burning the menu at 4:3, but the video at 16:9.

I did a test just for this;

Converted 36 old TV episodes to 480p 4:3 in AVCHD, each about 24 minutes.

Result: folder with all episodes, total size 21Gb, each episode plays nicely in 4:3 and media info tells that they are 4:3.

Post log from your conversion, there is something odd and log is only thing that can reveal what it is!

Here is one example. This is a pretty long log because I ahd to keep canceling due to my computer making weird noises wqhen trying t convert multiple videos at once.

I don't know which bbcode to use. I have seen it look better than this.

Also, the input file in this log is not always the type I used. I have used avi and mp4 also I believe.

Your log looks ok; almost like mine.
Minor differences, I had target on USB instead of BR disk, but format is the same.

What kind of TV are you using to watch? Flat or tube?
What settings are on BR player? (many of those automatically use 16:9 with ANY disc)

It doesn't put all discs at 16:9. Like I said, I have burned discs from convertxtoDVD and every one of them shows the proper 4:3. Also the menu from this one shows in 4:3 so that right there shows it doesn't always stretch to 16:9. I have the Blu-ray player upconvert to 1080p and then the tv is in dot by dot mode which means the exact aspect ratio the disc has it at.

Also, I don't have it set to Blu-ray, I have it set to AVCHD and burned on a regular dvd. But yes I chose for optical disc, not usb device.

Notice I also set custom size of almost 100GB, but surely that would not affect anything with aspect ratio.

So I am really stumped. And I really doubt I want to burn them in 720 or 1080 so if this isn't solved I have to force the tv into 4:3 mode if I burn them in 480 with no fix for this.

what do I have to do to format a thumb drive where I can use that format of AVCHD? I could do that if you don't want to try an actual disc, then I could know if the "for optical drive" setting is what is causing the issue.

I am still worried that this program is not useable, as so many bug reports on here are very bad, not minor issues, but ones which stop you from even making a disc that works. I am tempted to burn a data disc instead and forget this. The only problem is a FEW files my player will end up not recognizing and also it freezes up when fast forwarding or reversing when using a file form a data disc. Otherwise I would just forget worrying with this program as it's going to take up way more discs than a data disc would and has all these problems.

In fact in some cases I could fit everything on 1 disc with a data disc that would take 4 discs at 480p with this program, let alone if I tried to use 720p or 1080p. And my computer sounds like it's going to blow up if I convert in 720 or 1080 so I am just about forced to use 480p. I may be tempted to only burn the most incompatible files with this program and sue a data disc for the rest because why use 4 times as many discs AND have a stretched picture when I can use a data disc? the ONLY advantage of this program, in those cases, would be that navigation of the files wont freeze as often.

I tried it on a thumb drive now and it is stretched on that too. I know usually settings on a tv or player are to blame for this type of thing, but there's no way the menu would be 4:3 if that was the issue. Why would it make a menu properly be 4:3 and the titles not? That would not be settings on the tv or player or all would be stretched. The menu being 4:3 shows it's possible to read a 4:3 image on an AVCHD disc with this player.

At least I finally got the side masks on my kuro black. I have what's still the best tv/monitor there has ever been in many ways (pro-101fd), but they're a bit of a pain doing various things on in the service menu and FIANLLY I found where to change side masks to make them black instead of grey.

So now if they don't figure out my problem soon I will just give up and burn it with it stretched and out the kuro in stupid 4:3 mode. But I should not have to do that. The program should e getting this right rather than me have to use workarounds. And I am still worried that the stretching is done somewhere that affects the picture where putting in 4:3 still wont have the original quality. But I "guess" the problem is not in the encoding and so putting the tv in 4:3 I "think" would not harm the picture.

I just don't see how this happens to only me. It's giving me a headache dealing with this. And the problem with putting the tv in 4:3 other than being ANNOYIGN is then the MENU is squished. So I have to either have a squished menu or a stretched video! There is now ay that is a setting problem on my end, it's something being done wrong with the program somehow.

Your logic is a little bit off.
If nobody else gets this, and even you don't get it with every file, then it is either something on your settings or source files.

Can you find log from conversion that causes this problem?
If you remember what files cause it then you can convert only one or two and same should happen, then post log from that conversion.

Your player should have info about what format you can use on USB, some support only Fat32, and that is very limited format but should be enough
for this kind of tests as all files are less than 2Gb each. So format that thumb drive to Fat32 and simply copy conversion result there.

I already did the USB test, as mentioned earlier, and again it stretched.

Just because only I report this means nothing. Most bugs on here were only reported by one person and were found to indeed be bugs.

I have tried with several types of files. The file from a dvd, an avi, and a mp4. All three types stretched. Also, you can't blame the source. The settings in this say 480 4/3. It doesn't say "some sources wont work". The problem is the software if it is set to 4:3 and the result is really 16:9.

I have already said probably 5 times, the menu is in 4:3 and the movies are in 16:9. That proves it is not a setting on the player or tv! Any setting on there would cause BOTH the menu and the videos to do the same thing. When one is 4:3 and one is 16:9 it proves something went wrong with this program.

And really all that is happening is I am talking in circles on here and staff works different hours than I am awake many days, so it's just day after day of me waiting and the program not doing what it was set to do.

I have found PLENTY bugs in other types of software where the people on the sites claimed it was only me and it wasn't bugs and sure enough it was almost always proven to be bugs eventually.

And now I realized yet another problem if I just live with this and put the tv in 4:3 mode. That means I have to also zoom OUT to even see the full picture because 4:3 mode on the kuro cuts off a tiny bit of the top and bottom of the picture. So I would have to go through the hassle of changing both the tv zoom mode and the Blu-ray player zoom mode just to watch anything in close to the proper aspect ratio if this is not solved. Or burn in 720p which would take up much more space and my computer goes NUTS trying to convert in 720 or 1080, sounding like it's going to break it's so loud. Even in 480 lately it has made a lot of noise, but the higher the resolution setting the worse it sounds. So I am worried if I tried to burn a disc in 720 or 1080 my computer would break before it finishes a disc.

Only thing about providing a file is of course all shows would be copyrighted. I'[d have to figure out something to use that wouldn't be copyrighted just to be sure it;s ok.

I was trying it in my computer, but VLC wouldn't play it. Kind of weird that media players usually don't play avchds or blu-rays.

Only thing about providing a file is of course all shows would be copyrighted. I'[d have to figure out something to use that wouldn't be copyrighted just to be sure it;s ok.

Sure. If it is file that is available then I can get it myself, just need the name.
But if they are from original discs then it is harder.

I was trying it in my computer, but VLC wouldn't play it. Kind of weird that media players usually don't play avchds or blu-rays.

Yes it is. Some programs like PowerDVD are supposed to play those correctly.

Well.. you said that you checked settings, but some players do stretch to 16:9 if they are set to "auto" and material being played is not exactly 4:3.

I noticed in my logs that menu had this:
width=720,height=480,dar=4/3,(part cut),aspect=8/9
but actual movie had this:
width=720,height=480,(part cut),dar=4/3,aspect=10/11

This might be enough for some players to cause this, but more checks has to be made.

I bet that is the problem.

I emailed them in my support email conversation and mentioned this. I see in my logs the same thing. Since the menu shows in 4:3 that almost certainly means if they change aspect to 8/9 for video it will solve the issue for me. I hope they will agree to change it... I hope they don't say it would cause some other problem. I wish I could somehow change it myself in my copy.

I wonder what exactly aspect is for. dar is display aspect ratio and is 4:3.

Anyway, my player is set to NOT stretch 4:3 images. So the problem is not the setting on my player. I just went through all player settings.

I also wonder if there is any reason to believe that it would be different than 10/11 if I choose blu-ray instead of AVCHD. I am assuming it is unlikely to change aspect so I dn't want to waste a disc trying, when it will likely make no difference.

Well, this issue is not that simply.
According to this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_aspect_ratio
VSO is doing it correctly.
720x480 4:3 should be in 10/11.

So question seems to be more - why do some players show it wrong?
