[Request] Is it possible to improve the cut & trim editing ?

Post by windale »

Is it possible to improve the clip editing please ?

Can you add 'Next Frame' and 'Previous Frame' buttons so you can find the exact frame starting point to cut then press a 'Mark Start' button, then find the exact frame ending point and press 'Mark End'. This would be much more accurate than dragging a red bar.

For example, when editing out adverts you would need an exact frame position to cut the start and end (using 'Next Frame' and 'Previous' frame buttons). At the moment, all you can do is drag the red (trim) bar and or type in the clip time which is not accurate.

I joined two clips together in the advanced section, dragged the red trim bar for 3 different cuts (can't make small cuts close together because it puts a pre-sized cut), when I dragged the third red bar over the join of the two clips it locked up and crashed.

Can you also add 'Next Key Frame' and 'Previous Key Frame' for when making cuts and trimming without re-encoding, thanks.

EDIT: There are major problems with this, after making several cuts and encoding to MKV (with CUDA) the conversion FPS suddenly dropped to 2 FPS and won't cancel. Please improve the editing.

Hello,

I've formalized your request in our bug tracking system (different account/ database than the forum)
http://bugs.vso-software.fr/view.php?id=9242

I will post back when improvements have been made.

Thanks for your feedback.

+1 for this.

I've recently been using AVIDemux to edit clips without re-encoding and their method to edit is faultless. They have 'Mark start' and 'Mark end' buttons (then you can cut out or copy the section etc.) and for precision it has 'Next Frame' and 'Previous Frame' and for No re-encoding they also have 'Next Intra (key) Frame' and 'Previous Intra Frame'. Is there any chance you could incorporate this into your clip editor ? At the moment all you have is a 'Next Frame' button and have to drag a red bar which is completely inaccurate (and hard to get right, and even then the final result has cut several seconds different from what I selected). It would be good if your's could do this. Try AVIDemux to see what I mean, it's Free and it loads and saves in other formats not just AVI.

Your Cut & Trim editing is still very inaccurate. It's very difficult to make an exact cut and when you do, the output is completely the wrong part that you wanted cut/trimmed. I also made a cut at the start of a clip and at the end but the end one was completely ignored and didn't trim anything. Please please improve this (hopefully get rid of the inaccurate red bar dragging technique). Thanks.

I havent had a proper test yet but why arent you using the same cut & trim method from ConvertXtoDVD ? It's far superior to this one.

Hello,

Like ConvertXtoDVD doesn't use a timeline view (with zoom and scroll), we can't use the same way for cut function.
What is the missing thing in cut function for ConvertXtoVideo now?
You can start, validate and delete a cut section like in ConvertXtoDVD.
You can find a specific image/scene using next/previous frame and playback speed functions so, I don't know what I can do more?

I've had a quick go and it's not too bad actually. One bug i've noticed, you cannot goto previous frames with the jog wheel, but if you advance for instance 5 frames, it will let you go back 5 previous frames then stop. So to sum up, it won't let you go back a frame unless you go forward first.

I haven't actually converted anything yet though to see if it keeps the accurate cuts.

Still very buggy. Tried editing a 1080p MTS file. After making a few cuts (still feels very awkward especially when you can't rewind properly with the jog wheel). I tried to play the file with the 'skip cutted? parts when playing' option and it kept repeating a seconds worth over and over again. Once I had converted the file (using a custom CRF 20) it looked a bit stuttery like it's been very poorly deinterlaced.

Hello windale,

- Please post your log file with stuttering result.

- I fixed the previous frame issue after seeking for next version.

- I can't reproduce your problem about "skip cutted" option.
Can you give more details about your project?

The rewind on the jog wheel still doesn't work properly. It seems it will only let you rewind what's in the buffer and then it keeps repeating the last few frames.

MPEG-TS files like the specs I showed above still don't look right after conversion. Does your de-interlacer completely remove one of the fields and thats why it doesn't look as smooth as the original ?

That's exactly what the jog wheel do, seek in backward buffer.
The backward buffer keep 3 seconds of video for previous frame function.
If you want to see the picture before these 3s, a seek will be invoked and the displayed picture can be different as real previous picture.
I will check if I can implement a more precise seek there, but some files can have really big GOP and previous frame version will take a long...
Why do you need to seek backward further than 3s? Are you trying to see your movie from end to start?

For sure no, we don't drop any field... we de-interlace them
Can you please send your input file using our ftp transfer tool:

I uploaded 1 minutes worth as I have a very slow upload speed. The format was recorded with my little freeview TV box, it records to USB stick.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B749yV ... JYVkE/view

I don't trust that upload program you linked so I used Google Drive. Use the download button at the top middle of the screen.

Regarding the jog wheel, I thought it was to seek at will. I didn't know it was restricted to 3 seconds rewind.

14 fps while converting this format !! Is there a 64-bit version anytime soon ?

64 bit version soon, I don't thinks so, but coming at some point in the future.

Edit The rewind not working with the jog wheel, I confirm it does not work correctly. Thanks for reporting.
I got mixed up, but it seem Cedric explained it and you confirm already.

It might be staring me right in the face but I can't find the next/previous frame function.

Is there a Rewind button similar to the Play button?

Shouldn't the Play (and Rewind if any) buttons be toggle buttons so that you don't have to take your eyes of the preview window? With that I mean one Play/Pause button and one Rewind/Pause button.

the jog will will do what you want. If you click and pull (holding down) click far to right or left speed to go forward or back will be fast, moving only a little will allow frame by frame (image by image)

That is very hard to get working as intended. Why not the use previous and next buttons instead?

What about the two other questions I had.

Is there a Rewind button similar to the Play button?

the jog wheel also does fastforward rewind.

rewind only works well when on pause.

fastfoward can go much faster than rewind and works best when playing.
tell me how things go with this internal (not official/not complete beta) beta version 2.0.0.24
