Bug: main screen freeze

Post by Wout000 »

About 70% into an encoding from MKV to MP4 (h.264) in a project of about 3.3GB (end result) the main screen freezes.
Unable to click anything, or move the screen around, it just sits there showing whatever percentage it froze at but the VSO process itself still works and you can clearly see the CPU cores still working.
After leaving it a while, the CPU cores usage stalls and the project finishes and creates the resulting file which works (except for the subtitles see other thread).
The screen remains frozen and needs to be killed by using the task manager.

The crash logs don't mention the crash at all.

Using windows 7 (64bit) with the latest beta.
8 core CPU using AMD graphics card with acceleration enabled.

Just had another one. This time it actually showed an error.
As you can see from the log, it actually did finish the encoding. The program process itself didn't freeze as it finished the encoding, but the main screen froze and threw an error.
Not really a problem as it does finish the job but it's annoying to say the least.

Sidenote1: the added subtitles didn't work even though the log doesn't show any error (bug I mentioned before).
Sidenote2: The dutch language has some spelling mistakes in them.

can you try without the hardware decoding option checked?

Happens with hardware decoding on or off. Just tested with off and same freeze, this time without error messages.
Main screen freezes and only the border remains. The process is still running and will likely finish without error.

I'm guessing there is a severe memory leak in the GUI that makes it timeout or run freeze because of the lack of resources.

I think i'm close to putting my finger on why this is happening.
When i keep an eye out on my RAM memory, I notice that my 'available' memory goes to 0 when the conversion is about 70% done.
My "cache" memory however keeps growing and growing to the point it can't grow no more and therefor freezes the program.

I'd suggest to offload data instead of the cache memory to the harddrive, to preserve some available memory and to regularly flush the cache. It would also make the conversion more reliable and even allow to restart the encoding after a power out.
