Hear the Volume

Post by vsonut »

I have trouble with going straight from DVD... so ...
I am using DVD-Shrink.
It goes onto hard drive as expected.
DVD Converter finds it, and creates the .avi file perfectly.
...... BUT (and this is a BIG but)......
for some reason the sound is sooo low even when I max it at playback time, it is almost unhearable.
...................
QUESTION:
Could you add a "volume" feature to it, so we could "amp up" or "tone down" the volume if needed??
That way, if I didn't like the outcome of the .avi file's volume, I could trash it, and re-create it with a little higher/lower volume. (This could help compensate for a DVD movie that was created with a lower/higher volume than what the person wanted.)

Most likely this issues is not about sound volume.
When you convert multichannel sound to avi you need to be sure that your system knows what to do with that soundformat.

Setting system to 5 or 7 channels and then connecting only pair of speakers or headphones might cause this as you are getting only two channels out of 5 or 7.

Thing is... I've done this using the 2 channel and 5.1 channel settings.
In Shrink picking the 2 channel, and in DVD Converter the 2 channel.
In Shrink picking the 5.1 channel, and in DVD Converter the 5.1 channel.
......
Both ways gives me the same results "very low volume".
......
This is why i am suggesting giving a way to "up" or "lower" the volume for recording to compensate for it.

It does not matter what your settings are.
I'm talking about your computer. Is it set for 5.1 mode but only 2 speakers connected?

System is set for 2 channel.
BTW.... I took the "low volumed" .avi movie, ran it through MyDVD, and let it export it back out "with a higher volume".
And it worked.... so.... not for sure what is going on.
However, If the program had the "volume setting" in it, there would be no need to "push" it through another program (MyDVD).

Update:
I took the movie "Donavan's Reef", and it would not go on straight.
I used DVD Shrink to put it on the hard drive.
I used ONLY the 2 channel audio when placing on the hard drive.
I used my 3 different DVD viewing programs to view it. The sound was fantastic.
I opened DVD Converter, and chose "Low resoulution Xvid" with "Best quality".
Once DVD Converter was done........ the sound was less than half the volume it was before.
That is way too low.
I even tried it at "Low resolution H264" ... still the same.
I can understand it lowering the video size and quality for this setting.... but it seems to be also lowering the audio quality.
At least give a warning, that "xxx" setting will lower the volume of your video by "xx" amount. This way we can pick a higher quality.
But.... then again, I have seen low res movies on YouTube, that had audio that could be heard from a distance, instead of having to be right on top of it to hear it.
.......
As I first said.... having a "audio volume control", would really help out.

Hello,

Since version 1.2.1.18 an audio booster has been added to the software. Have you tried it?
