Playback issues with DVD+R and DVD-R

Postby bjarnar3 » Tue Mar 11, 2008 12:17 pm

I have the modest goal of archiving digital photos on DVD+Rs. The media I am using are Taiyo Uden discs, and I am burning them at 4X. So far, my other computers with DVD drives have not been able to read the burned discs. So, I tried burning the files onto a plain DVD-R disc: my wife's desktop can read that disc, but my laptop drive cannot read that one either. The laptop drive documentation says that it should be compatible with DVD-R and DVD+R discs.

There are no labels on the discs, they are high quality media, and I am burning them at a low speed. The burner is an Addonics external drive that is DVD-R and DVD+R compatible. I do not want to create slide shows out of these files, I just want to archive them on the discs. I would appreciate any advice that could help in solving this problem.

Hi,

Okay, here is the log for the initial burn to the DVD+R that none of the other local computers could read; just to clarify my last message, the drive I am using to burn the DVD can read the completed disc without any problems:

The log shows two burns, one with a DVD+R "YUDEN000-T02-00" and one with DVD-R "CMC MAG. AM3". Do you have the same reading problem with both discs or just one of them?

Hi,
Actually, the first burn was on the Taiyo Uden DVD+R, and the second was on a Staples DVD-R. The other computers I am dealing with here are a Dell Inspiron Laptop and a Dell desktop. The Dell desktop cannot read either disc, but the laptop can read the Staples DVD-R (and its drive is supposed to support DVD+R media). I also tried a DVD+R burned in my Addonics drive in two other Dell computers with DVD drives over the weekend, and neither could read the disc, which I why I am investigating the problem with the VSO software and my archiving.

So, ironically, in terms of intermachine compatibility so far, the Staples disc has been more successful - which makes me think the problem has to do with the DVD+R media and the VSO software.

correction

Sorry, I made a mistake in the last post: my wife's desktop, which is a more recent model, can read the crappy Staples DVD-R disc, but cannot read the Taiyo Uden DVD+R disc. The laptop, which is supposed to be DVD-R and DVD+R compatible, cannot read either.

Hmm, weird... can you post the drive models of both machines?

Here are the drives involved:

Burner: QSI DVD-RAM SDW-O86 USB external

Desktop: HLDS GCC-H10N CD-RW/DVD-ROM

Laptop: Samsung SN-324F CDRW/DVD

According to spec's I have found online, the desktop and laptop drives should be DVD+R compatible, but neither drive will read a DVD+R burned on the USB drive shown above with CopytoDVD. The Desktop drive will read a DVD-R burned on the USB drive, but the Laptop will not read either disc. I am trying to use Taiyo Uden DVD+R discs for archiving digital photos because I had read that they were likely to remain stable and have better forward compatibility than DVD-R discs of other brands.

Thanks for trying to solve this problem: I really do not want to buy another drive or box of discs...

Hi,

I wish I had the magic solution, but I don't.

I burn anything and everything with CopytoDVD, and it has not failed me yet !

DVD+R / DVD-R (Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim) all at x4.0

Also with ConvertXtoDVD, all burns are smooth, just plain weird !

I just noticed it says Multisession enabled in your log.
Try disabling "Create/continue multisession media" (on Multisession tab in CopyToDVD settings) and burn again.
Maybe the drives are not able to read unfinalized discs...

Holly shit Batman !

What a good catch !

Definitly, DVD players will wine about this, but other computer drives should be able to read the media
