How do I start a scan on my CD/DVD writer? The 'start' button is greyed out.

I am trying to scan a burned music CD
at first only the surface scan was available. file test was greyed out.
after doing the surface scan and it finished the file test became available.
The status has been stuck for quite a while now. at
sector 318368
2010-08-08 19:30:02 Info Capacity: 622 MB (318371 Sectors)
when I look at task manager the program is still running
I burned this CD using iTunes back in 2005 I wrote the date on it.
Today while listening to it in my CD player. it would play part of a song then return to the beginning play to the same stop then repeat. it also tried to read later songs and always went back. so I wanted to scan it for errors.
at more recent CD that I also had in my CD player played no problem.
its a Verbatim branded Taiyo Yuden.
