Cannot convert file at all

Post by dbminter »

I've got an MKV that absolutely will not load in CDX. "One or more files cannot be loaded. Make sure it is a valid media file." The MKV plays on my PC, but CXD will not load it. The MKV will not play on my Blu-Ray player which supports MKV. AVIDeMux will not convert it. Chokes on the audio channels saying they are incompatible. Any Video Converter only converts the first 30 some minutes, replacing the remaining hour with audio but solid black for video. VSO's UHD Converter does the same thing, although it replaces the solid black from Any Video Converter with a still image of the last video frame it was able to process.

So, I'm screwed. I've no idea what to do at this point because everything else that should work isn't, of course.

Thanks!

Can you get any info out of that file?
What is video type, what is audio type?

MKV is a container, it can have almost anything inside and it seems that the file in question is not standard.

Hello,

To look at the info of a video, I play it in VLC Player and press <CTRL-J> and see the streams...

If I want way more info, I use this !

https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download

Provide us the media info.

I am curious, do you have a link where we can get this file ?
This way I can have a look at it, and/or upload it to VSO for a full analysis.

Just an idea, could it be a bad source file ?

Thanks...

If you wish to upload it to VSO yourself, you can do it here !

Create a folder called something like "All VSO Software cannot convert this file"

Upload your video to their platform if you want: https://upload.vso-software.fr/

The file in question was on the hard drive of a friend's son who died. He asked me to preserve the contents as much as I could and I found a file he apparently downloaded from somewhere. Don't know the origin of it beyond that and I can't provide a link. I can upload it, but it's like 1.15 GB. However, I don't mind upping it for analysis.

Don't know what specific metadata you're looking for, but here's everything I found I thought relevant about the properties of the file as returned by Media Player Classic - Home Cinema:

Re: Cannot convert file at all

Post by dbminter »

I'm starting to think it's simply a poorly encoded file. Given where I found the file on the HD, it appears to have been downloaded. My experience has been like 50% of all downloaded containers have some problem with them. Most common being audio out of sync with video.

Most likely bad file.
Very often groups create specialized version that work properly on their own system.
Audio or subtitle out of sync is very common, file works perfectly with their own player/codec.
Best option is to get better source file.

I'm uploading the file to All VSO Software cannot convert this file in the File repository, but I think that's going to be a non-starter. I've got like less than 20 Mb/S upload speed. I think I'll have to cancel this upload and just put it on a cloud and link it here.

Well, FileGator is a non-starter. After an hour, 0% had been uploaded, and it eventually stopped doing anything. It cut off the transfer itself. So, I'll have to up to a cloud and get back to you on that later.

MUCH better. Less than half an hour to upload to my cloud.

The file is archived in a multi-part ZIP file split at the 100 MB mark to make for less likelihood of a bomb out during download requiring restarting all over again. ZIP created with 7-Zip.

Hello,

VSO UHD v1.0.0.58 has no issues converting this file to H265 or H264

Video plays in VLC and I can see all streams

Video is VP9 and audio is Opus

Maybe ConvertXtoDVD hates those stream so if you are going to run it in ConverXtoDVD, maybe it needs a UHD Conversion to make it
Max 1080p / H264 / AC3 audio which will make this video compatible.

On a side note, you might lose all subtitles if you convert to H264 with UHD, I have a question (No seen yet) if this is a bug.
Converting to H265 with UHD keeps the subtitles.

I confirm that the converted H264 output of VSO UHD Converter WILL load on ConvertXtoDVD

I also confirm you lose the subtitles :(

I opened an official but (info) with VSO on this matter...

Yes, UHD Converter converts the file and yes CXD will load the UHD Converter output, but the output by UHD Converter is NOT correct. Forward to approximately 40 minutes into the output and it's either solid black with audio or a still image with audio, I forget which.

At least it's not correct on my end.

Any Video Converter does something similar.

I, too, discovered UHD Converter does not preserve the subtitles.

Oh I see now, I guess I missed those details if it was mentioned before.

I confirm, H264 or H265 conversion does have those issues passed 30+ minutes when the original seems to play 100% if I move forward.

I will open an official bug report and upload the file to VSO for analysis.

Thanks for that!

I THINK I mentioned it had playback issues around 35 minutes after conversion, but I wouldn't go back just to check. :)

Yeah, the source file plays fine on a PC as far as I could tell through just scanning through it. But, it doesn't even load on my Blu-Ray standalone player which supports MKV container playback from flash drives.
