Upgraded and preview now does not work

Just upgraded from 2.9.6.1 to 3.1.0.2. I am trying to play a slide show I have been constructing under the older version. Fast preview now does not work. Screen will show one photo for an extended period of time and then go black and stay black. The time counter jerks ahead, from say 0:17:44 to 1:13:64 to 1:18:82 to 1:37:98 etc. with no intermediate times. Audio portion sounds fine. Tried rebooting computer. Ideas?
