PostPosted: Fri Nov 20, 2009 9:49 am    Post subject: DVD Burns fine, problems backing up Reply with quote

I convert the files, they burn on to DVD fine, it says WRITE SUCCESS: Disc written. When I try to back the DVD up in DVD Shrink or do a direct copy it gets stuck at the end. Even when I play it, the DVD gets stuck right at the end, around the last minute or so. Once when I had this problem I tried converting and burning the file again, it worked the second time. I'm not sure what the problem is, I tried different media and still got the problem on three different types of media I used, I suspected it may have been because of programs running in the background so I closed everything and tried again, still the same problem. Maybe something was open that I didn't notice? Maybe my lens are dirty or my burner is not working properly? Any advice? Also I have this software on another computer of mine and it works perfectly fine on there, never any problems.

Your log shows:

1] You are using an old version. Update to latest.(use only cleanvso to remove old version)

2] You are using a well known crap media having burning and reading problems.

other:
3] Use frequently (once a month) a cleaning disc to have the lens free from dust.

Sadly simple brand means nothing, you need to check actual media ID.
I have seen CMC MAG branded as Maxell, Sony and TDK. (and others)

Sounds like a classic "doing something else on the PC while it's burning"
problem to me. That can cause this problem.

I think you are right, I updated my version of ConvertXtoDVD, cleaned the lens on my burner, and used good quality media, still the same problem.

So Then I closed a bunch of programs that open on their own when I start my computer, and it worked this time. The next day I tried again and forgot to close the programs, and it got stuck again at the end, so then I burnt it again after closing the programs running in the background and it worked fine. I am curious as to which program it is that is interfering with the burning. These are the ones that I do end process on before burning:

HP Quickplay Resident Program
PC Tools Antivirus Client
ItunesHelper Module
Windows Sidebar
Windows Update
LiveUpdate Notice Service
Ad-Aware Tray Application

I could always close just one program and go through them simultaneously until I narrow it down to the one that is causing problems, feels like such a waste of DVD-R's though. The strange thing is that none of them are newly added programs, and I had no problems until now.

These two might interfere. Try shutting them both, then only one.

If you are serious about keeping the maximum resources available to you on your PC, you will check everything in the Start-up group and System tray that runs when Windows is started .. or anything else that runs in the background ... like Camera softwares, Photo helper items, other burning entries, etc. and remove them. There is VERY LITTLE that NEEDS to run permanently, apart from AV items, Firewall, connection status, and a few others. They access Windows or check online frequently, and drain resources. They can cause problems when burning, and result in playback problems like you experienced.

P.S.

You don't NEED any of those running!
Live update is Norton I think .. I found a waste of time.
Probably (if you use Adaware Pro .. you could use tray app when on web)
PC Tools AV Client is an add-on isn't it?

Use HijackThis App to scan and see what's actually running. If you have problems still, post HijackThis log output here. It's a great tool.

You experiencing end of track problems, the outer portion of the dvd is the hardest section to write to. If trying better media doesn't solve the problem then your burner is finished and should be replaced.
