Depends on actual size of video in pixels. 720p should be more than 576 pixels (PAL) and 480 pixels (NTSC) high, so it would be downsizing.
Very often those files are still only 576 pixels or less high, and that is PAL max height.
But very often that number on file name is wrongly referring to width instead of height. Video width is more dictating factor, if it is more than 720 pixels then video must be downsized or cropped.

Why so difficult ??

Just load file into ConvertXtoDVD and look at Source file info.
There you find the resolution and more detals about the source file.

Ha yes LOL!!!! Forgot.

Would also be nice if downsample from HD to SD to save some subtle sharpening, like msharpen in avisynth...is this on the road map?

Apparently it's partly fixed. Subtitles no longer stay on the screen until the next subtitle appears. But somebody has reported that, when using the 2-pass option for encoding, subtitles only work for the first part of the video then stop showing up at all. It doesn't happen when doing 1-pass encodes. However, he's the only person reporting this, and nobody else seems to be able to reproduce what he's reporting, so it seems to work fine for others.

Regards,

JoeB

Thanks. I tried spline, 2 pass on a H264 1280x528 AC-3 6ch video that was 100 min long...it was blocky. I will stay with lanczos.

Generally speaking, I'd say that would be a good idea. But you didn't say what the output looked like using the same input video with Lanczos instead of Spline.

Did it come out looking good and not blocky with Lanczos?

It wasn't blocky with Lanczos; in particular the night scenes with movement were much smoother. Spline really blocked...(Smartedge 2) would really rock, esp. if quality is your 1st priority.

FANTASTIC.

Look in your conversion log, and see if your input size (Ratio) is bigger than the output... (720 x 480) VS an input of 1024 x 768 for example, in this case you would downscale.

If you have an input file of 320 x 240 then you are UPSCALING to (720 x 480)...

720p MKV usually have a high ratio so I will assume you are downscaling.

Thanks for that "Filling The DVD" information. The size gap with version 4 is huge with the same settings. Version 3 usually uses the whole capacity of DVD-5. But when I converted one 4,37GB, bluray file with version 4 to DVD, the final size was only 1,84GB. I always thought that also the size of the file affects to the picture quality.

As you are now aware, it's mostly a factor of movie running time and scene detail. I don't actually use v.4, which now has an Automatic setting to auto choose a setting based, I believe, mostly on running time. I can't say how accurate it is, so it you have a movie with a runtime of less than 160 minutes but more than 80 minutes you likely should be using Medium. It might not hurt to check to make sure that v.4 isn't automatically choosing Low (i.e., being too cautious in its auto decision).

Unfortunately, it is not as simple as comparing source file resolution with that of the target DVD because source and target can use different pixel shapes.

The procedure is given in http://forums.vso-software.fr/determine-if-source-file-will-be-upscaled-or-downscaled-t10640.html#52426

Just converted and burned my first two movies with V4, using that "Lanczos" filter everyone praises. I can still see very visible block action during some darker scenes.

Several things come to mind.

First, are you upsizing or downsizing, and by how much (having your log would help).

Second, can you see the artifacts when playing back on your software player on the computer? If so, you can do some testing without wasting discs.

For testing, try converting the same video again with another filter (I'd suggest Linear (not Fast linear) and see if you get the same result or if it works better. You don't have to convert the whole movie, just enough to encode the scenes where the artifacts seem to be visible in your previous conversion.

If you do some testing with different filters, please report your results. Again, it's important for people to know the actual pixel size of your input file.

JoeB

Video processing: Lanczos (VSO) resampler (1280*544)->(720*364)

You are downsizing. Somebody else said they preferred Spline for downsizing, but then somebody else said they tried Spline and it made blocky arifacts but Lanczos worked fine. The truth is, it often depends on video quaility and video content, so I'm afraid one size doesn't fit all in the case of resampling.

Again, I can only suggest that you run a couple of tests, trying perhaps Spline and also Linear, with the problem videos and see which gives the best result.

You didn't say whether or not you were able to see the artifacts on your computer software player or only when played back on your TV. If you can see the artifacts with your software player then you won't have to test by burning a DVD or even converting the whole movie (as I said in my previous post).

Regards,

JoeB

And you didn't say if the macroblocks show up when you play the original source file, any there can't be removed by CX2D.

It would help in cases such as this to post some screen snapshots showing the macroblocs so we have an idea of the magnitude of the problem. Some people get upset if they can see two small macroblocks while others night not worry about large macroblocks covering half the screen.

Does the 100 Feet mkv file cause the biggest problem? Conversion results indicate it has relatively simple scenery such as a lot of dark scenes. If that file does not show macroblocks on the computer, you might get better results by manually switching to the Short Project encoding option. I wouldn't recommend the same for The Good, The Bad, The Weird.mkv file though.
