desert rose wrote:Hello, i have been using convertxtoDvd for quite a long time and never had any problems until recently. It converts the video i want but when it comes to building the menu it stucks, saying that it has failed. I have already tried to use a different template, it worked once but after that one time i continue having the same problem.

We need more information.

Except for that one time that worked when you used another menu template, do you have the same problem with all other projects with different files, some of them or only the one project shown in your log?

I usually convert more than one files at a time and never had a problem by doing so. The only time that it did not crash was when i tried to convert only one video and used a different template (by the way, this doesn't seem to do the trick now either). Here's when it did convert succesfully:

Sounds like your computer is overheating on long conversions.

Vacuum all the air intake and exhaust openings, take it apart and vacuum or use compressed air to clean dust off of memory, the motherboard and the CPU, then direct air from a fan at the computer during your next long conversion. Also pull the memory chips and clean their contacts before re-inserting them.

And do a Fresh install exactly as prescribed in the Announcement at the top of the forum just in case before trying again. Then repeat that last long project you showed the log for and let us know what happens.

When you say it stops, do you mean the computer locks up or shuts down or that just CX2D itself errors or stops working? If whole computer gets slow, shuts down or locks up then probably is an overheating issue as mentioned. If just CX2D stalls or errors out, but other than that computer still functions fine, then likely not an overheating issue.

Does it ONLY happen when gets to menu building stage or does it happen sometimes in the middle of movie conversion as well? If just during menu creation, I'd say it is likely a menu template problem. Does it seem to always happen after conversion of last title or sometimes say after 2nd title when converting 3. If only after last title then sounds like a template conflict when building title menu. Template ini might be corrupted. Browse to C:/Program Files[x86]/VSO/ConvertX/4/templates/vso glossy folder. Then download and extract file below and replace existing 'vsoglossy_clear_6ch.ini' with attached one you downloaded. Retry converting using that template and see if fixes problem.

The computer does not lock up as shown by the logs, encoding ends with the error and the project file was saved later in one case. That would indicate it was not an overheating problem as you said, except for the fact that the same VSO glossy 6 eps template was used for both the long first conversion that failed and the last short one that completed menu generation using the same template without a problem. That indicates the problem is not in the template ini file.

We will have to wait and see what is causing the problem, access violation errors can be caused by many factors and not always the obvious ones, so you have to eliminate possible causes one or two at a time. So I hope desert rose will go ahead and do the maintenace designed to reduce heating problems, maybe a memory chip fails under heating at an address critical to menu generation, who knows for sure. The only clue we have so far is that the problem happens with two long conversions but not with one short one.

And the suggested Fresh install will take care of any template corruption as well as that in any of the encoding modules.

Then we can start asking more questions to pinpoint the problem further if those steps do not fix the problem.

IMO, If it was an overheating issue, it wouldn't just affect CX2D. That's why I asked if experiencing other computer issues when error happens. If computer is getting hot enough to cause CX2D to error, then poster should notice at least computer lagging more than usual as well.

Agreed on maintenance CK. Even if overheating not the cause, always good to clean out dust and make sure all fans are working.

If not menu problem, here's my opinion on likely causes.

1) Memory going bad. Check RAM with Memtest.
2) DirectX not current or corrupt. In run prompt, type DXDIAG and press enter. Under 'System' tab/ 'System Info.' last line should say DirectX11. Might pay to reinstall just to rule it out as cause.
3) Possible sound card driver issue. Update your sound card driver.
4) Other running processes conflicting with CX2D's memory access. Shut down all unnecessary processes during conversion.
5) CX2D trying to access an open/locked file under a user account that doesn't have admin rights.
6) Windows updates not current.

Overheating can manifest with simple failure when certain operations are being performed under stress. Same applies to overclocking problems.
I have seen several systems that have been running fine without any problems, but when some new program has been installed it starts crashing at certain point.
Changing RAM or CPU has solved those issues.
Simple test for overclocking problems is Windows installation, for some reason it just crashes several times if CPU is overclocked too much.

Well, until original poster gives feedback on what has already been discussed, we are just wasting server space and needlessly stretching thread.

Perhaps they have already solved the issue and just haven't updated post.

I hope desert rose hasn't been confused by all the discussion and discouraged from trying to do anything. His/her test conversions take about 5 hours so we need to tailor suggestions to be specific and get to the cause of the problem with as little effort as possible.

Here are the primary reasons I suggested the overheat maintenance and a Fresh install.

We have logs for 3 conversions done with VSO glossy templates: a long one done on 7-20 using the 10 episode template that failed when building the title menu, a short one done on 7-23 with the 6 eps template that was successful, and a long one done the next day with the same 6 eps template that failed. The long conversions took about 5 hours while the short one took about 2 hours.

And desert rose wrote
Also, when i try to convert more than one files, for example 3, it converts the fisrt one and sometimes the second one and succesfully builds a menu, but when it comes to the last one, it stopos while building the menu, i mean, this happens after at least two hours withouth having any problem at all. And as i said, i never had any kind of problems before, this is happening for a week now...

That statement isn't exactly clear, but taken together with the logs indicate a possible overheating problem with long conversions or an actual error during rendering of the title menu.

Overheating is common in even mildly dirty computers this time of year because temperatures are higher and because conversions are very CPU intensive which generates a lot of heat during conversions that last 5 hours. Dramatic computer lockup, auto shutdown or sudden restarts may be the primary symptoms of overheating but they are not the only ones that can happen, all computer components are stressed under high temps and can fail in some unpredictable way. So a heat maintenance procedure is definitely indicated to determine if it is the culprit.

The logs indicate that the menu templates are not the culprit unless something corrupted the 6 eps one in one day. That is a possibility of course but the question is what could corrupt them. It is possible that a badly fragmented hard drive could do so among other possibilities. But it is also possible that some component of CX2D code has become corrupted which could cause CX2D to itself corrupt the template ini file every time it is opened, because CX2D does not just read the files, it opens then saves them upon closing. And it is possible that the templates are OK but the CX2D code that renders the menu has been corrupted. Anyway, a Fresh install is indicated because it will restore coding modules and menu templates.

Then a test conversion that repeats exactly one of the long conversions shown in the logs will show if one of those is the culprit or if other possibilities need to be considered.

It would also be a good idea for desert rose to download Memtest and test the memory, as you suggested, after that test is done while the computer is still hot if the conversions does fail again.

The main reason I initially suggested a possible template ini problem CK is that it sounds like OP is saying problem seems to always happen during menu creation. This to me would indicate a template problem.

Not likely an overheating problem would ALWAYS happen to cause CX2D to error at menu creation stage, it would be more random. It's possible that say his RAM or CPU are going bad as you mentioned, which is causing it to struggle performing conversion and therefor overheating system, but again entire system would show symptoms, not just CX2D IMO. I noticed how long posters conversions were taking as well, which seems like an unusually long time to me. Says computer is running Windows7, so I am ASSUMING computer is not very old since it is usually hard to find Windows7 drivers for older systems. No matter what the cause, if it is an overheating issue, then it WILL affect more than just CX2D. That is why I had asked if system was having problems when errors happened, such as slower than normal window and/or start menu opening OR locking up, shutting down, restarting, etc...

We just need more info. from OP at this point, otherwise we are just spinning our wheels.

I don't want to get into the middle of this argument, er umm, cough cough, discussion, but would like to add this if he/she is going to clean the inside of the CPU because this happened to me. I cleaned mine last year because I didn't watch it and it was pretty nasty. I actually had to take apart my GeForce to get it clean because it was pretty damn clogged up. DOH!! I usually keep up on that too but didn't.

Any way, if you happen to take off the fan from the chip, before you put it back on, you need to use what's called "Thermal Grease" between the chip and fan. I mention this only because my mother board took a dump last month and had to be replaced. I thank God I could renew my warranty, and the guy from Dell that replaced it said that because I didn't use it could have been why it took a dump. And mine was shutting down before I cleaned it.

Just a heads up. If ya need it, just Google Thermal Grease.

Good luck...

It does seem that the problem always occurs when rendering the title menu, not the root, etc. But why is a short conversion good one day but not a long one done the next day using the same template if the template is the culprit? There are other more likely culprits IMO.

Not likely an overheating problem would ALWAYS happen to cause CX2D to error at menu creation stage, it would be more random. That would normally be true but we aren't dealing with an ordinary problem, this would not be happening unless something odd is going on.

I noticed how long posters conversions were taking as well, which seems like an unusually long time to me. Says computer is running Windows7, so I am ASSUMING computer is not very old since it is usually hard to find Windows7 drivers for older systems.

The CPU model is about 2 years old I think, and it is running very slow, about 1x during conversion.

No matter what the cause, if it is an overheating issue, then it WILL affect more than just CX2D. That is why I had asked if system was having problems when errors happened, such as slower than normal window and/or start menu opening OR locking up, shutting down, restarting, etc...

Yes but maybe only after a long conversion and desert rose may not notice at that point especially if overheating is only marginal and is causing only a slight problem with only one component, or if he/she stops and lets the computer cool before doing anything else.

We just need more info. from OP at this point, otherwise we are just spinning our wheels.

Yes the next step is up to desert rose.

@Tattoo,

I think the computer is a laptop so about all that desert rose may try, unless experienced, is blow dust out and remove memory chips to clean their contacts. It sometimes helps with laptops to elevate the rear of it by propping something under it to allow heat to escape better from the bottom side.

Have no idea, it is odd. That's why I asked about the other stuff to try and get more information. Figured, trying to make sure ini was correct was a easy/quick initial step he could try to fix problem or be ruled out.

ckhouston wrote:That would normally be true but we aren't dealing with an ordinary problem, this would not be happening unless something odd is going on.

Agreed

ckhouston wrote:The CPU model is about 2 years old I think, and it is running very slow, about 1x during conversion.

I believe that CPU was released around September of last year. Think you're correct CK about it being a laptop, I'm thinking one of Dell's pieces of garbage. IMO, age of CPU model isn't really an accurate judge of system age. Unless you build a system yourself or have one custom built, your likely not going to get the most recent hardware. For example, I was in Best Buy just browsing around a few months ago and noticed they didn't have a single desktop with the latest Intel i-series processors for sale, which have been out for quite a while, however they do now. Leads me to think that average retailers probably wait a good while before selling systems with newest hardware. Probably so that a customers purchase is already out of date before they even buy it, which means the sooner they will be back to buy another. Which is why I have been building my own systems for past 10+ years. Not saying it isn't that old, it may be, just saying age of hardware isn't a good judge and that's why we need OP to help us out with more information.

ckhouston wrote:Yes but maybe only after a long conversion and desert rose may not notice at that point especially if overheating is only marginal and is causing only a slight problem with only one component, or if he/she stops and lets the computer cool before doing anything else.

Again, that's why we need feedback from OP. So we can find out for sure what CX2D/system is doing or not doing.

@Tattoo:
I don't consider us arguing in this thread, I hope CK feels the same as it is not my intent. If I have come across that way CK I apologize. Me and CK are just throwing ideas out there trying to figure out problem, which is difficult when OP isn't providing any feedback. As CK has said, it would be strange that a template would work fine for one conversion, but not another if was an INI problem. Just seemed like a logical first step to me since sounded like problem was always happening at menu creation stage.

I accidentally reproduced this problem, including the exact error message, and now the answer seems obvious.

It can happen when the menu VOB file is tied up by another application. For example, if a a conversion has already been made to a conversion folder, say xxx, and the VIDEO_TS.VOB is held by another program, say a video editor or video player, then, if the conversion is repeated to the same xxx folder with maybe a change in settings, the title menu generation will fail with that error message. And the conversion will similarly fail when generating the root menu if the root menu VOB for that title is held by another program.

So the question for desert rose is did all your failures happen on a second conversion attempt of the same files while a program was still running that had played the first conversion?

Here is some more info in case someone posts a similar problem in the future.

Scenario: A conversion has already been made to folder xxx, another program is running that has a hold on one of the menu files in that folder, and another conversion is made to the same xxx folder resulting in an access violation when trying to render menus. This is possibly the case in this topic because the first file opened is the same in all 3 conversions shown in the logs so all 3 conversions were made to the same folder.

Possible error messages are:

Exception EAccessViolation [Access violation at address 0054E4EB in module 'ConvertXtoDvd.exe'. Read of address 00000000] raised when building title menu

Exception EAccessViolation [Access violation at address 0054E4EB in module 'ConvertXtoDvd.exe'. Read of address 00000000] raised when building menu -- note that title menu is not mentioned, this can happen when there is a hold on a root menu file

Exception raised in conversion Thread with message "Access violation at address 0054E4EB in module 'ConvertXtoDvd.exe'. Read of address 00000000" -- note that there is no mention of menu, this happened when a conversion was repeated while the prior conversion's root menu was playing in WMP -- a wierd aspect of this was the progress bar in CX2D was not updated during the entire repeat conversion

The messages above were generated when WMP or Womble's video editor had a hold on the pertinent files. VLC produced different results as I have come to expect. When the title menu was playing in it from playing the VIDEO_TS.IFO file while a repeat conversion was done, the error message was

Exception EFCreateError [Cannot create file "C:\Users\Ken\Documents\ConvertXToDVD\2.25 AR\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.IFO". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process] raised when building IFO's

That error did not occur if the VIDEO_TS.VOB file was played and paused in VLC, and there was no error when the root menu was playing or had been played and paused in VLC.

There are probably other error messages that will be generated if programs other than the 3 tested here have a hold on a prior menu file while a repeat conversion is done to the same folder, however, they will probably contain "Read of address 00000000" or be self explanatory as in the message above that was generated because of VLC, and they will be generated while a menu is being rendered. The address in the "[Access violation at address 0054E4EB in module 'ConvertXtoDvd.exe'." part probably varies depending on CX2D version.
