Hi,

Do you have success converting the video WITHOUT the subtitles ?

Wonder if the issue is the subs and/or the video file...

I have several questions for which I would appreciate clarification.

1) In the Video Processing settings I notice that "Use hardware decoding" is not checked by default. As using hardware decoding is supposed to speed up conversions, the lack of this being the default suggests that doing so might also have disadvantages. Is this so and, if so, what is the disadvantage of checking this option?

2) In the Encoding settings I also note that the Maximize Bitrate option is not checked by default. Is that because there is no real benefit from using this option? Or is it because there are disadvantages to using this option? In either event, what are the advantages and/or disadvantages?

3) The "What's new" list posted in the forum mentiones having both fullscreen and widescreen menus, but when scrolling through the templates in Menu settings I don't see anything in the descriptions that indicate whether a template is fullscreen or widescreen. How does one make this determination?

4) The list also mentions improved audio quality. Specifically, in what way is audio quality improved?

5) EDIT: i also notice that the Audio Settings no longer has the option to check for "Do not fix audio discontinuities". This was often useful in the past with some out-of-sync problems. Is there a reason it is no longer available?

Regards,

JoeB

Is is not possible to expand the Titleset #1 information in tree view like we could in v.4? I have attached screens of v.4 and v.5. In v.4 the titleset is expanded so I can access stuff like Video Result. In v.5 there is no Plus sign by the Titleset #1 line. When I right click the highlighted line there is an Expand/Collapse Titleset option but clicking it doesn't do anything at all. Am I missing something?

Where are the v.5 templates hidden? Version 4 has 3 subfolders in Program Files - Background, Lang and Templates. Version 5 only has Background and Lang, yet it loads 37 templates which I can't find. It can't be taking them from my v.4 Templates folder because that folder has over 80 templates which all load when v.4 loads.

The templates: On Windows XP, they have moved here --> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\ConvertXToDVD\5\templates

On Windows 7, they are in C:\Users\Common somewhere in there :)

After reading your post I couldn't find them in Common but did a search for .ini files in c:\users and found it in C:\Users\Public\Public Documents (Windows 7 32 bit). It doesn't make any sense to me not just putting them in Program Files like previous versions!

Thanks for pointing me to Users!

Do you have any answers regarding the other stuff I posted? VSO won't be back until after the weekend.

Leave it to Microsoft to screw things up for no reason. In this case they take files that not only are associated with a specific program but that often need to be accessed by the program's user for editing purposes, etc., and completely separate them from the program's main directory! And worse, there's no dialogue or anything telling the user where these files get hidden. Sheesh! :-(

That folder's a heck of a long way to go to find a template file you want to edit in Notepad.

Thanks for your comments so far. Unfortunately they will not be many answer until monday as we posted the version on a friday. Except some beta testers can provide answers - thanks Cougar and other who will.

Yes the templates were changed locations because of right/privileges need to update files within CXD and this cannot happen in the old location. A readme txt file was supposed to be already added in old template location providing the path to new location, but will be added shorty.

I don't know the answser to them all.

1) Edited since original post:. Yes there are disadvantages that is why it is not by default. For a complete answer please read
hardware-accelerations-guide-t16234.html

2) There are still some adjustments being done with regards to the encoding profiles. I'd say it is still to early to test and comment on. Basically this Maximize Bitrate setting is to satisfy users who think a bigger is better as far as quality. You know that there are many posts written on the subject. If VSO thought it was best checked then it would be, but it is an option maybe some users would like. The hint on the setting basically sums it up. I'd say let VSO finish fine tuning before digging deeper in this setting.

3) The full or widescreen menu - normally should work like this: the menu will be in the format of the 1st titleset of the project. (as you can have both 4:3 and 16:9 formats on 1 DVD). If this is not the case please report.

4) Better audio quality due to rewritten engine - there are no settings for this. I don't know the technicalities of this.

5) One of the main reasons the engine was rewritten and V5 and is a big deal is that normally most if not all audio/video sync issues should be resolved. Now the version is out in the real world we will see if this is true. In previous versions usually what corrected some audio/video sync issues broke other and it was an endless battle. Fingers crossed this will no longer be an issue. Of course audio/video/subtitle offset is still available. "Do not fix audio discontinuities" does not apply to the new engine.

Items in treeview are now menu related. All the other information is in the tab under the preview editor window. You cannot expand your titleset as you have a menu template select that has hardly any editing options. (Change templates and you will see a + appear).

I have just tried the same file using the Simple but Elegant template in v.4. I don't know if this is the same template as in v.5 but in v.4, tree view, there is an option to use a custom video for the thumbnail or even remove the thumbnail. I don't see that in v.5 either in tree view or with the buttons under the preview screen when I have that window open.

I still have a problem with using an 'mpeg' video as background in the CX2 template. The 'duration' default is set at 20secs and despite altering that (to 104 secs in my project) it still only runs for 20 seconds. The other problem I had with opacity has, indeed, been fixed.

@JoeB

The v5 template still allows customization of the thumbs but has not been implemented in program code. That would be a good feature request for you to submit.

BTW, v5 templates are basically the same except some parameter values are specified in a different format. So don't try moving your v4 custom templates to v5 until they have been modified.

That is an active bug. You have to type in the duration you want rather than use the roll arrows until the problem is fixed.

Do I understand you to mean that code had not been implemented in v.5 to allow customization of thumbs with any of the templates? If so, what could possibly be the reason for that regression? Or were you just saying that it doesn't work for that particular Simple but Elegant template?

EDIT: i just tried one of the glossy menus and you can change the thumbs for that one so I'm going to assume it's only the Simple but Elegant menu that has the problem. If I'm wrong about that please let me know.

ckhouston wrote:BTW, v5 templates are basically the same except some parameter values are specified in a different format. So don't try moving your v4 custom templates to v5 until they have been modified.

Also, for clarification, are you saying that all of the 50+ custom menus presently available on the forums are useless in v.5? I'm not sure we can expect the creators of those menu templates to go in and edit all of them to make them work in v.5. It's not often I use one of the templates that come with the original program (almost always choosing one of the custom templates) so that would be a real issue.

And Claire says choosing a template will cause CXD to make it either widescreen or fullscreen depending on the A/R of the first video. Do any of the instructions that you have provided for making custom widescreen Background images have to be changed for use with v.5 or do they still all apply?

JoeB
