i think you should change your guide to include MKv2VOB, an app for converting MKV files for the Sony Playstation 3

(but really, it's for any PVR or NMT or even an Xbox360, kinda.)

i'll explain why

1) ConvertX doesn't handle DTS->AC3 conversions, mkv2vob can. (due to the legal/license restrictions of DTS/AC3, ConvertX can't viably touch this with a 90ft pole)

2) it can hardcode subs into the film (not always a good thing), but it could be helpful if ConvertX doesn't support that subtitle format. i suppose.

3) m2ts files work a fraction better. only a fraction. see 4)

4) since the mkv-> m2ts conversion includes resyncing the audio, no more wierd sync issues.

5) can do 1gb/2gb/4gb/4.5gb/9gb cuts for quick'n'dirty chapters, but mostly for fitting onto sd cards or video players.

6)can re-encode to mpg2 for faster output to dvd (not worth it, ConvertX will have to resize anyway.)

downsides:
1) supports/encodes hard subs, no alt. subs

2) loss of alt. audio tracks and loss of sync on alt. audio tracks is possible

3) can lead to re-encoding the entire film into a mpg2 format for no reason if it's not recognised. (preferable to encode to mpg2)

there's probably a few more downsides, but if you're converting a 3rd party format for use in convertX, best to make it a "simple" standards compliant video file.

Correction, CXD can already convert DTS to AC3.

Thanks. Most of your settings I already have applied, but this is still very helpful info.

I've adjusted my settings as reccommended in posts above, but I still can't add .mkv files that are 1080p... 720p works just fine, but 1080p still results in:

"One or more files can't be converted. Please see the log for more details."

Unfortunately, the log only posts that the file is an "unknown format."

Any suggestions?

The brand name is usually not the best indicator, it's the Media ID of the disc that indicates quality because it indicates the place of manufacture. Use the free VSO Inspector to check the ID of your media, then go to this link to see how it's rated:

(EDIT: I originally had the wrong link, and have edited to provide the correct one as posted by hansk.)

Generally speaking, however, Phillips are not very reliable because they outsource the manufacture of their discs all over the place, many of them plants with little quality control to speak of. The only media I know of that isn't outsourced is Taiyo Yuden, Made in Japan, which are excellent quality. Verbatim are usually good also but the do some outsourcing to suspect plants as well.

JoeB
